My Laptop Has Died, Long Live the Laptop

Hello to all who are watching this blog. The hard drive on my laptop died, and this blog will be down temporarily while I find some new way to post. Thanks for waiting, and I hope to be back soon!

Everyone calls it "DU," but when it's dressed up as an ivory tower for college brochures the name formally transmogrifies itself into The University of Denver.

University of Denver: Trees of Knowledge

DU campus seen from S University Boulevard, 28 May 2007. I believe these are science buildings -- the humanities departments seldom get such nice digs.

This interesting monument to peace graces the grounds of the University Park United Methodist Church, just across the street from DU's theology school. Photographed the morning of 28 May 2007.

The Robert and Julie Newman Center for the Performing Arts, seen from South University Boulevard, 28 May 2007. When panoramas are shot at a 45-degree angle, there is less "bowing" or bending of lines caused by lens distortion.

University of Denver: Newman Center Panorama 2

A panoramic view of the Robert and Julie Newman Center for the Performing Arts, located at the intersection of South University Boulevard and East Iliff Avenue, on the southeast corner of the DU campus. Photographed the morning of 28 May 2007, this image is composed of seven separate photographs. Even with some software correction for a 50mm lens, a fish-eye effect is very clearly visible. The more advanced (and expensive) versions of panorama "stitching" software can correct distortion and straighten the lines to a more natural perspective.

One of the windows at the Newman Center for Performing Arts is designed as a stone rose.

The Women's Foundation of Colorado

Located near the Denver University campus, The Women's Foundation of Colorado is associated with the Women's College of the University of Denver.

The Women's Foundation: Golden Spiral Window

This unusual window illustrates the geometrical construction of a Golden Spiral using Golden Rectangles. The Golden Rectangle at the center is created by placing two small 1 x 1 squares side by side. Next to them is placed a square of two units (2 x 2), and next to it a square of 2 + 1 = 3 units (3 x 3) followed by a square of 2 + 3 = 5 units (5 x 5), followed by a square of 3 + 5 = 8 units (8 x 8), etc. The result, when one connects the opposite corners with a curve, is a growing spiral that follows the famous Fibonacci sequence: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21. . . . This is also a visual expression of the Golden Mean or Divine Proportion, Phi, because this spiral cuts a rectangle in such a manner that the ratio of the smaller section to the larger section is exactly equal to the ratio of the larger section to the whole. The ancient Greeks saw this as an emblem of the divine harmony and order underlying nature, and they incorporated this "Divine Proportion" into construction of the Parthenon, a temple devoted to the goddess Athena. It is therefore a very appropriate emblem for the Women's Foundation.

Denver Arts Festival Sign

On the Memorial Day weekend, Denver held its annual "Fine Art and Fine Craft Exhibition," otherwise known as the Denver Arts Festival. The sign seen here was on display right beneath the huge "Denver Pavilion" sign that is a landmark on downtown Denver's 16th Street Mall.

Denver Pavilion Sign

You aren't in Kansas any more. As this sign indicates, it's Denver. Specifically, the Denver Pavilion, the very heart of the 16th Street Mall at the very heart of downtown Denver. The annual arts festival is a major event each Spring. By the way, did I mention that it's in Denver?

Photoshop recipe: Filter > Artistic > Cutout. It's that simple.

Art Fest: Landscape Photo

Landscape photographer Tim Zandee displays his amazing work at the Denver Arts Festival held 25 to 26 May 2007 at the Denver Pavilion on the 16th Street Mall. A sign on his tent indicates that Mr. Zandee does NOT digitally manipulate his photographs, they are developed entirely by hand in the dark room using UV light. See his website at: http://www.tzimages.com/

Art Fest: Gallery in a Tent

A local photographer displays his excellent work in a simple tent at the Denver Arts Festival, held on the Memorial Day weekend.

Art Fest: Painted Footsteps

Footsteps painted on the pavement of the Denver Pavilion lead one inexorably to the Denver Art Festival's popular wine tent. Somehow all the colors look brighter after a good glass of Chardonnay (see next photo).

Art Fest: Mirrors 1

Are they admiring themselves or the artist's colorful framework? People certainly seemed fascinated by these mirrors at the Denver Arts Festival, seen here the morning of Saturday 26 May 2007.
