Denver Art Center: Pano 1

The interior of the Denver Performing Arts Complex, seen from the third floor parking level. This is a great view, made of four photos stitched horizontally with Arcsoft Panorama3 software. Unfortunately the camera metered differently as it travelled, and my hands tilted ever so slightly, resulting in some blurring and misalignment. This is why the experts suggest using a tripod and taking the camera off auto-meter when shooting panoramas. I'd love to go back and redo this!

Colorado History Museum: Mural

A panorama made by stitching together several photos of the wonderful mural over the door of the Colorado History Museum.

The towers of the Denver Public Library are reflected in the windows of an overpass across the street.

A crowd enjoys a free lecture in the court that divides the Denver Public Library from the Denver Art Museum. The Saturday tour was offered as part of the "Open Doors" Denver festival.

The Byers Evans House Museum

On Saturday 14 April, Denver celebrated an "Open Doors" festival by offering free admission to many historical buildings in the downtown area. I arrived at the Byers Evans House a bit too late, however -- their doors closed at 4pm. The house was built in 1883 by Rocky Mountain News publisher William Byers at 1310 Bannock Street, and offers a fascinating window on pioneer living. Pint's Pub

Pint's Pub at 13th and Cherokee may be found at a strange little crossroad west of the Denver Art Museum. It also serves public servants from the nearby City and County Building who need a good stout beer with their bangers and mash.

Abandoned Tonka toys contrast nicely with the Easter Egg colors of the row houses at 13th and Cherokee, Saturday 14 April 2007.

Bail Bond Row

A strange strip of bail bond businesses mark this stretch of West 13th Avenue at Cherokee Street, just across from the City and County Building. The Denver Art Museum and the Public Library may be seen in the distance.

Dancing Statues 1

Am I a great photographer, or did the artists who made these statues actually plan this view? Hmmmm. The dancing statues are on the west lawn of the Denver Performing Arts Complex, seen here from the southwest as one approaches on Speer Boulevard, 14 April 2007 around 4:30 p.m.

Snowy Easter: Fat Ladies Frozen in Time

Lonely and cold, my dreams of a sunny Easter brunch drooped. Not a single cafe open for business. Yet somehow I felt blessed by the eery and peaceful silence. There was a strange beauty to the sight of April's fragile and tender blossoms quietly enduring the weight of virgin snow.

Like the rest of Denver, a bear statue on the 16th Street Mall silently endures a face full of Easter snow.

Downtown Denver on Easter Sunday, 8 April 2007. The morning was cold and grey. City workers stood about, using squeegees to remove snow from the sidewalk, just in case anyone felt like shopping. All Easter Egg hunts cancelled!

Colorado Rapids' New Stadium: Billboard

This grungy billboard on Colfax Avenue advertises Dick's Sporting Goods Park, the new home of the Colorado Rapids soccer team. This photo was taken on April 7, the date of their first game in the new arena. Promotional tarps showing star soccer players have been hanging on the 16th Street Mall for more than a month.
Many Denverites just love the Rapids, and they are fanatically devoted to watching every game. They are not so certain if they love the new stadium, however. It's been given mixed reviews.

Dick's Sporting Goods Arena: Proper Perspective

The new home of the Colorado Rapids soccer team is way the hell out in Commerce City. Shown here from the highway, it can be seen in its proper perspective: a huge development surrounded by dirt. My friend Mitchell thinks it's cool that they kept the name "Commerce City" -- because it's honest and American. It certainly is a truck driver's paradise. This photo was actually taken as we left the first game at half-time. It was way too cold -- snowing in fact -- and the new stadium is wide open to the prairie wind.

Colorado Rapids: Fans Arriving

Colorado Rapids fans arrive at the new soccer concentration camp. Okay, okay, the new stadium isn't that bad, but it was a bitterly cold day, and the "concrete slab" look must have been dreamt up by some architect from East Germany.

Colorado Rapids: Fans Warming Up

Many people arrived early for the Colorado Rapids' season opener, and wound up waiting in the stadium club house, the only heated room at the new arena. With nothing to do, they stood about watching each other and talking soccer.

DC United Warmup

DC United, the opponents of the Colorado Rapids at the April 7 season opener, arrive on the field to warm up. They needed to warm up! It was f-f-f-f-freezing.
